IMEDI TV and PosTV have been heavily sanctioned by the British authorities, who accuse them of deliberately broadcasting misleading information about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The British statement indicates that these channels portray President Zelensky as illegitimate, Ukraine as a corrupt country and a puppet of the decadent West! This rhetoric is entirely copied from Russian channels.
Beyond the purely moral condemnation, the sanctions are severe financially. The British government is freezing their assets, and they no longer have access to British fiduciary services. Their leaders are banned from exercising their functions. Four members of IMEDI’s Supervisory Committee resigned on February 26, the day after the sanctions were announced.
The links between these two channels and the Georgian Dream government have long been proven. IMEDI, the most watched channel, is heavily indebted, with its debt regularly covered by preferential loans granted by companies linked to Georgian Dream and its founder B. Ivanishvili.
One of the consequences of these sanctions is that IMEDI, which received 45% of total advertising revenue thanks to its proximity to power, is likely to see its income drop considerably!
