On October 4, nearly 100,000 people gathered in Tbilisi. Since then, Rustaveli Avenue, every evening, is the scene of police violence and arbitrary arrests of peaceful opponents, young and old. All continue relentlessly to protest against a regime that gradually suppresses freedoms, tramples on democracy, to establish an authoritarian regime modeled on Russia. To try to bring down this daily protest movement, the police forces use particularly violent methods to arrest and imprison “activists” who are completely peaceful. Also targeted are journalists who have remained independent. The TV channel “Formula,” surviving as best as it can, trying to inform without yielding to government propaganda, has been hit: 3 of its journalists, including star presenter Vakho Sanaia, as well as Keta Tsitkishvili and Tsira Jvania, were arrested and are still imprisoned. Soviet repression is back: as of October 23, Georgia had 123 political prisoners. The number increases every day.
