European Commission suspends visa exemption for holders of Georgian diplomatic, service, and official passports

Holders of diplomatic passports are now subject to visa requirements to enter the Schengen area for official purposes.

This mechanism has been activated in response to Georgia’s deliberate and persistent violation of key areas related to democracy and fundamental rights.

The EC further states that: “The actions of the Georgian authorities since October 2024, including the crackdown on protesters, opposition politicians, and independent media, have had a negative impact on the situation in Georgia and have led to violations of several fundamental rights and international legal standards.”

This suspension applies in all member states without exception.

It should be noted that when holders of Georgian diplomatic, service, and official passports apply for a Schengen visa, member states are encouraged to carry out a thorough check, conducting an interview and requesting supporting documents from applicants, refusing visas “in case of doubts about the reliability of the information provided.”
